- Born into a poor family in Xilu Village, Maxiang, Xiang'an, Xiamen, Huang Tingyuan — known in family and company usage by the Hokkien romanization Ng Teng Guan — received only two years of private schooling before leaving home to make his own way, largely self-taught thereafter. After travelling to Taiwan to study medicine, he returned to Xiamen and opened a dental practice, from which his fortunes gradually grew. His life ran along three intertwined lines — industry, the press, and revolution: he founded several newspapers, including the Bowen Daily (《博文日报》) and the Xiamen Daily (《厦门日报》), advocating reform; in 1908 he established Amoy Canning (淘化大同), the earliest cannery in Fujian, and served as director of more than a dozen other enterprises; during the 1911 Revolution he secretly funnelled funds and distributed the pamphlet Revolutionary Army (《革命军》), and after the liberation of Xiamen he was awarded the First Class Order of Restoration and held a succession of senior military and civil posts. In his later years he led the Citizens' Association for the Preservation of the Houhaitan Foreshore (保全海后滩公民会), contending for years with the British colonial authorities and eventually forcing the unconditional return of the concession. Having grown wealthy, he did not forget public welfare, donating to more than ten schools and several hospitals. He died of illness in 1936, aged 76. He was also versed in music and deeply fond of the guqin, keeping several instruments at home and often playing together with his family — the point of origin for the Huang family's guqin lineage.
